Stressed? Read this!

In the United States, the month of April is Stress Awareness Month. Before the month ends, I wanted to share some thoughts about stress and ideas on how to manage it.

First, stress has been a part of my life, more so in the last several years, so when I talk about stress, it’s from firsthand experiences. I wish I could say it hadn’t been a big deal in my life but it is what it is. I don’t think anyone is immune from stress, however. There are people who seem to handle it better than others. Perhaps it’s simply because they’ve learned ways to cope. The bottom line is that we all can learn ways to manage and cope with the stress in our lives. Here are some ideas on how.

Learn and practice the Serenity Prayer

Get enough sleep

Eat a healthy diet

Focus on spiritual peace

Simplify

Stop micromanaging

Stop multitasking

Learn to say NO

Focus on beautiful things you enjoy, such as flowers, music, nature, the arts

Pray

Learn to let go

Unplug and relax from the technology

Walk (consult doctor first to see if it’s okay)

Get enough sunshine

Read

Laugh

Enjoy stress-free time with a family member, friend, or a pet

Volunteer

Get a massage or have a spa day

Talk to a trusted person about your feelings

Don’t dwell on the negative—focus on the positive

Try not to complain—it becomes a habit

Write in a journal

Take up a healthy hobby, such as vegetable gardening

Keep things in perspective and remember, “This too shall pass.”

Stress awareness is all about recognizing stress (stressors—those things that cause stress), learning coping skills, and managing it as we go along.  🙂

Here’s a quote that very appropriately sums it all up:

“Stress is an important dragon to slay—or at least tame—in your life.”—Marilu Henner, actress and author
